Amritsar holds countless fascinating stories and secrets waiting to be discovered. From ancient legends to modern marvels, this destination continues to captivate visitors with its rich heritage.
The Legend of Amrit Sarovar
The Amrit Sarovar, the sacred pool surrounding the Golden Temple, is said to possess healing properties. Legend has it that Guru Amar Das, the third Sikh Guru, discovered a herb that could cure all ailments in the pool. Before him, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru, often meditated on the banks of this very pool, further solidifying its importance in Sikhism. Devotees believe that taking a dip in the Amrit Sarovar can cleanse their sins and grant them spiritual enlightenment.
The Kohinoor Connection
Gobindgarh Fort served as a secure vault for the Koh-i-Noor diamond during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The diamond, one of the largest and most famous in the world, was kept under tight security within the fort's treasury. Although the fort never faced a serious threat during Ranjit Singh's rule, it was designed with elaborate defense mechanisms to protect its valuable assets, including the Koh-i-Noor. Now visitors to the fort can see a replica of this famous diamond.
The Significance of Langar
The Langar at the Golden Temple is a testament to the Sikh principle of Seva (selfless service) and equality. Anyone, regardless of their faith, caste, or creed, is welcome to partake in the free meal. The Langar is run entirely by volunteers who prepare, cook, and serve the food with utmost devotion. The food is simple but nutritious, consisting of roti, dal, vegetables, and rice. It’s estimated that over 100,000 people are fed daily, a remarkable feat of community service and organization.
